The European Union urged Israel, Iran, their allies and regional actors to show restraint after escalation in Syria, said the official representative of the European External Action Service Maja Kocijancic at a briefing in Brussels on Monday.

“The military escalation throughout Syria including the events we have seen on the Israeli border over the weekend is deeply worrying. It could indeed lead to a dangerous spillover.  We are following the situation very closely and at the same time we urge the Syrian parties, their allies, as well as the regional actors to show restraint and avoid actions that further escalate the situation.”

According to Israeli military, an Israeli helicopter shot down an Iranian drone that entered the territory of Israel from Syria on Saturday. In response, the Israeli Air Force attacked Iranian facilities in Syria, destroying the control point of an unmanned aerial vehicle.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said it struck 12 targets after the jet was downed, including  eight Syrian targets, among them three aerial defence batteries, and four Iranian targets.
