YEREVAN. – Armen Sarkissian has been elected the fourth President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian.

Armen Sarkissian was born on 23 June 1953 in Yerevan. He graduated from the Yerevan State University, Theoretical Physics and Mathematics department.

From 1976 to 1984 he was a professor of physics at the Yerevan State University. He is also the founder of the Department of Computer Modelling of Complex Systems at the University’s Department of Theoretical Physics. In the 80s he was a visiting research fellow and later Professor at the University of Cambridge, Institute of Mathematics of London University.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, in 1991-1995 Sarkissian was the Ambassador of Armenia to the UK. In 1991-1999 he served as a Senior Ambassador to Europe, Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the Vatican. He was also the head of Armenia’s mission to the EU. In 1996-1997 Sarkissian was the Prime Minister of Armenia. In 1998 he was reappointed as Ambassador of Armenia to the UK.

He is the founder and one of the directors of Eurasia House.  Since 2013 he serves on board of trustees of International School “Dilijan”.

Sarkissian is holding honorary and executive positions in a number of organizations: Chairman of Global Council on Energy Security (WEFForum), Vice Chairman of East west institute (EWI), Commission member of Euro-Atlantic Security Initiative (Chair of Energy Security), Founding President of British-Armenian All Party Parliamentary Group, Board Member of Global Leadership Foundation (GLF), Dean’s Advisory Council, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Dean’s Advisory Council, Harris School of Public Policy Studies, University of Chicago; John Smith Trust member, International Economic Alliance, Global Leadership Foundation, Honorary Senior Research Fellow at School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary & Westfield College, London University; Honorary doctor of National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.

He has authored numerous academic articles and publications on theoretical physics, astrophysics, computer modelling, political science and transition economics.
