At least 86 people were killed after a ferry carrying hundreds of people capsized on Lake Victoria, Tanzania, BBC reported.

It is feared that more than 200 people may have drowned.

The ferry overturned near the shore between the Ukara and Bugolora islands.

According to the preliminary version, the ship was overloaded when crowds on board moved to one side as it docked.

Local media noted that the ferry’s capacity was 100 passengers, but the authorities confirmed that at the time of the crash more than 400 people were on board.

Thirty seven people have been rescued and are in critical condition.
