YEREVAN. – Armenia’s Orinats Yerkir (Rule of Law) Party (RLP) mayoral candidate Mher Shahgeldyan has come to Sunday’s snap election for the capital city Yerevan Council of Elders with high spirits and good expectations. He told this to reporters while casting his ballot in the vote.

“This is a key election, since it’s the first after the [recent] revolution [in the country], and it’ll have a phase value in the establishment of a political democratic system in the Republic of Armenia,” he added. “Yerevan isn’t just a community where 40 percent of the country’s population lives; 40 percent of the country’s economic and intellectual resources [also] are concentrated here.”

Shahgeldyan recalled that under the law, the Yerevan municipal council can be formed if three political forces win respective seats, and he stated that the RLP strives to be among this “trio.”

He noted that Sunday’s election is very important because it is expected to be conducted without irregularities, vote buying, and use of administrative resource.

The RLP mayoral contender said if elected into the Yerevan Council of Elders, this political party plans to promptly address all the challenges which city faces.

In Mher Shahgeldyan’s words, the second important task is joint collegial work with various political forces in order to implement the development strategy of Yerevan.
