YEREVAN. – At its special session on Monday, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Armenia announced the preliminary results of Sunday’s snap election for the capital city Yerevan Council of Elders. 

Accordingly, CEC Chairman Tigran Mukuchyan informed that, from the twelve forces which ran in the election, the My Step bloc of political parties garnered the most votes with 81.05 percent (294,109 votes), the Prosperous Armenia Party came in second with 6.95 percent (25,219 votes), and the Luys (Light) bloc of political parties was third with 4.99 percent (18,112 votes).

He added that 43.66 percent of the eligible voters have cast their ballots in Sunday’s Yerevan city council election. To note, the voter turnout in the previous Yerevan council voting was 40.99.

According to the election law, the final results will be summed up on the seventh day after the election (September 30). And under the law on local self-government in Yerevan, the session of the newly elected Yerevan municipal council is convened on the tenth day following the official issuance of the election results; that is, well-known comedian and actor Hayk Marutyan, who heads the electoral list of the My Step bloc, is expected to assume office as next mayor of Yerevan on October 10.
