Well-known comedian and actor Hayk Marutyan, who will become the next mayor of Armenia’s capital city as a result of Sunday’s snap election for the Yerevan Council of Elders, has issued a statement to Armenians and Yerevan residents.

“This victory is the victory of our team,” the statement reads, in particular. “This is the victory of solely our people, who proved to the whole world that they are united and resolute on the road to building a democratic state. I am proud of being one of you. I am happy that I am part of you.

“I thank you for [your] trust [in me]. I am ready to serve you every day, every hour, every minute, every second so that we together turn our Yerevan into the city of our dreams.”

According to the preliminary results of Sunday’s snap election for the Yerevan city council, the My Step bloc garnered the most votes with 81.06 percent, the Prosperous Armenia Party came in second with 6.95 percent, and the Luys (Light) bloc was third with 4.99 percent.

Hayk Marutyan, who heads the electoral list of the My Step bloc, will automatically become the next mayor of Yerevan because this political force has garnered more than 50 percent of the votes, and in this case, according to the law, the person who heads the electoral list of the given political force is considered mayor-elect.

Marutyan is expected to assume office on October 10.
