Google, Facebook and Twitter failed to fulfill their pledge to fight fake news, European Commission said.

Europe’s Security Commissioner Julian King criticized the lack of progress as Brussels is aspiring to combat fake news or foreign interference during campaigning for the European Parliament and national elections in Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Poland, Portugal and Ukraine, Reuters reported.

“Sadly they have fallen further behind. They need to live up to the standards we are asking of them, & that they signed up to,” King tweeted.

“Platforms have not provided enough details showing that new policies and tools are being deployed in a timely manner and with sufficient resources across all EU Member States. The reports provide too little information on the actual results of the measures already taken,” the statement issued by the European Commission reads.

“Finally, the platforms have failed to identify specific benchmarks that would enable the tracking and measurement of progress in the EU. The quality of the information provided varies from one signatory of the Code to another depending on the commitment areas covered by each report. This clearly shows that there is room for improvement for all signatories.”
