In 2018, Armenia, a member state of the Eurasian Economic Union, imported 65,000 cars from third countries. This is what Chairman of the Standing Committee on Regional and Eurasian Integration Affairs of the National Assembly and Deputy of the Prosperous Armenia Party’s parliamentary faction Mikayel Melkumyan informed during the Committee’s March 4 session.

Melkumyan also recalled that Armenia had imported 37,000 cars from third countries in 2017.

The MP noted that Armenia has imported twice as many cars in the course of year and recalled that the customs duty for cars will depend on the power of the car’s engine starting from 2020, adding that this will increase the cost of imported cars by 4 and even 5 times.

In regard to this, Melkumyan addressed Minister of Economic Development and Investments Tigran Khachatryan and suggested the colleagues of the EEU to postpone the mandatory increase of customs duties for Armenia by 5 years. In response, the Minister informed that Armenia had addressed its Eurasian colleagues with a similar request earlier and the increase had already been postponed.
