Residents of Armenia’s Zartonk village have decided to stop the demonstrations that they have been holding for several days with the demand for the village head’s resignation. This is what villager Hamlet Abovyan told NEWS.am, stating that he and the other villagers had gone to protest in front of the government building and had presented their issue.

“Two hours ago, we received a response stating that the Prime Minister had viewed the documents. Government officials will come to the village in the next 2-3 days and start examining what the village head has done in the course of his term of office,” he said, adding that he and the villagers have no expectations from the regional governor’s office.

Head of Zartonk village Paruyr Sargsyan told NEWS.am that he had invited the demonstrators to meet a couple of times, but nobody came.

“I will never resign. I’m not going to refuse 900 residents just for 100 people,” he said. As for the government’s examination, he added: “I will be very glad if they come sooner so that we can finally close the subject.”

Deputy Governor of Armavir Province Karen Grigoryan told NEWS.am that there had been a discussion with the village head and villagers, but the demonstrators still demand that the village head resign.

“We’ll conduct an examination. If we detect illegal actions, the regional governor’s office will address judicial bodies and follow the process,” Armavir’s Governor Karen Grigoryan said.
