The European Union has no intention to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, said representative of the EU diplomatic service Maja Kocijancic.

The EU stance remains unchanged, she said adding that the EU, under the international law, does not recognize Israel's sovereignty over the territories occupied by Israel in summer 1967, TASS reported.

As reported earlier, Trump declared the need to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

“After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!” He tweeted.

His tweet came as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Jerusalem.

After Donald Trump made the announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted: "At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Thank you President Trump!”

Israel seized much of the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War.
