Russia condemns the US recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, said Russia’s Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman on Friday.

Her remarks came after the US President Donald Trump tweeted on Thursday that it was time to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights that Israel seized from Syria in 1967, Reuters reported.

According to her, a change in the status of the Golan Heights would be a direct violation of UN decisions

As reported earlier, Trump declared the need to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

“After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!” He tweeted.

His tweet came as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Jerusalem.

After Donald Trump made the announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted: "At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Thank you President Trump!”

Israel seized much of the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War.
