Syria condemned in the strongest terms irresponsible statements made by the US president Donald Trump on the occupied Syrian Golan, SANA reported referring to the Syrian Foreign Ministry’s statement.

According to the source, the US decision confirms the US blind bias to the Zionist occupation entity, stressing that these statements will never change the fact that the Golan was and will always be a Syrian Arab territory.

The US position towards the Golan Heights clearly reflects its contempt for international legitimacy and its violation of international resolutions, especially UNSC Resolution No. 497 of 1981, which rejects the decision of the Israeli government and its measures regarding the Golan Heights, the statement noted.

As reported earlier, Trump declared the need to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

“After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!” He tweeted.

His tweet came after the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Jerusalem.

After Donald Trump made the announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted: "At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Thank you President Trump!”

Israel seized much of the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War.
