YEREVAN.— Wiretapping devices can no longer be imported to Armenia, director of Armenia’s National Security Service Arthur Ventsyan said on Friday.

The issue was raised during the meeting of Armenian parliament’s standing committee on defense and security.

MP from ruling “My Step” bloc Andranik Kocharyan said that besides National Security Service, certain state agencies and oligarchs owned wiretapping devices.

“The are focused on the matter. Imports of similar devices is banned by law, and the agencies authorized to conduct investigations and customs control only have the right to import such equipment,” Vanetsyan explained.

He found it difficult to answer whether such equipment is imported in Armenia and assured  that they are doing their best not to allow this.

“We are checking some reports. If have precise results, we will make them public,” he added.
