YEREVAN. – Over the past weekend, the Russian border guards at Agarak checkpoint on the border with Iran have stopped two cases of smuggling attempt of narcotics into Armenia.

In the first case, the sniffer dog detected banned substances inside a vehicle, and in the second case—inside a specially-built pocket of trousers, press service of the Russian Federal Security Service Border Guard Department in Armenia reported.

In both cases, the persons who had attempted to smuggle in narcotics were Iranian citizens. They said they were entering Armenia to spend their holidays on the occasion of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year.

The confiscated substances have been sent for expertise.

The relevant Armenian authorities are taking measures toward ascertaining the circumstances behind these incidents and bringing the perpetrators to account.
