Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday discussed the situation in Libya with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu during the phone conversation, the press service of the Russian MFA reported.

The ministers have exchanged views on the current situation in Libya, expressed concern about the serious deterioration of the situation due to the ongoing clashes between various armed groups in Tripoli, which led to numerous casualties. The Russian side stressed that the deep crisis that engulfed Libya is a direct consequence of the NATO intervention in 2011.

According to the ministry, the sides have reaffirmed their support for the promotion of political and diplomatic settlement of the Libyan crisis on the basis of the UN action plan.

The ministers reviewed the preparations for the next high-level meeting on Syria in the Astana format, emphasizing on the need to start the work of the constitutional committee as soon as possible in order to implement the UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the decisions of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress.
