A protest rally was held in Gyumri Sunday, and against the operation of the Amulsar gold mine of Armenia.
Mariam Papazyan, an organizers of this rally, said with it they express support to the activists who are fighting against the exploitation of this mine.
Karen Avagyan, another demonstrator, said the “Amulsar without Mine” movement is nationwide.
As reported earlier, the Investigative Committee of Armenia publicized the results of the comprehensive audit report which was commissioned to the Advanced Resources Development (ELARD) Lebanese consultancy firm, and regarding any likelihood of environmental risks from the exploitation of the Amulsar gold-bearing quartzite mine—including whether it poses any threat to the waters of Lake Sevan and the mineral waters of Jermuk town.
And as a result of this audit report, 16 points were noted in its conclusion, and which, if maintained, would make this mine’s environmental risks manageable.
Subsequently, in capital city Yerevan, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan invited Jermuk residents to a meeting whose participants, however, were unhappy with the results. At the same time, a protest was held in Yerevan against the operation of the Amulsar mine.
Afterward, Pashinyan visited Jermuk, met with residents of the town, and also visited nearby villages. The majority of the population there opposed the mining industry.
Then, the PM announced that he instructed to send ELARD’s audit report to the Ministry of Environment for further study to determine if there was a need to conduct a new Environmental Impact Assessment.
Gyumri Day is celebrated Sunday in the second largest city of Armenia, and Nikol Pashinyan and his family are also participating in the celebrations.
Senior officials from the National Assembly and the government are in Gyumri, too.
