YEREVAN. – The second power unit of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) will resume electricity supply in September. Ashot Martirosyan, Chairman Armenian Nuclear Regulatory Authority [Committee] (ANRA), noted this at a press conference on Friday.

In his words, however, this will be carried solely after conducting additional safety studies.

“Next week the Committee will consider the ANPP request to resume electricity production,” he added.

Martirosyan noted that the work had started in 2016 and it will be completed in 2021, but it is carried out with some deviation from the schedule, and this is due to objective and subjective reasons because the extent of work is considerable.

“The assessment work is carried out in two phases,” the ANRA chief said. “In the first phase, the resource availability is assessed for the safe operation of the nuclear power plant for a ten-year period. Most of the work is already done; a successful testing has taken place.”

The project of extending the duration of operations at the ANPP second power unit is linked to resource restoration, extension of the nuclear plant’s lifetime by ten years, as well as increasing the level of safety and efficiency of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant.
