Microsoft president Brad Smith considers the measures that the US authorities are taking against the Chinese company Huawei to be unfair.

US President Donald Trump and his aides did not properly explain why Huawei is considered a threat to the country's security and take various restrictive measures against it, Smith told Bloomberg. 

According to the president, Washington should not prevent Huawei from acquiring products from US companies, including software.

Such actions shouldn’t be taken without a “sound basis in fact, logic, and the rule of law,” he said.

According to him, Microsoft turned to the American regulatory authorities for clarification on their position regarding Huawei. 

“Oftentimes, what we get in response is, ‘Well, if you knew what we knew, you would agree with us,’” he said. “And our answer is, ‘Great, show us what you know so we can decide for ourselves. That’s the way this country works.’”

Trump has signed a decree introducing a state of emergency to protect the US information and communications infrastructure from external threats, and as a result, the US Commerce Department blacklisted Huawei because of a threat to national security.

Trump signed a decree that banned US departments from using equipment manufactured by Huawei and the Chinese company ZTE. The Huawei leadership called this decision the US infringement on the legal rights of Chinese enterprises, adding that thereby Washington sentenced himself to lag in the deployment of 5G network.
