YEREVAN. – Mikayel Melkumyan, a member of the opposition Prosperous Armenia faction at the National Assembly (NA), has proposed to add a clause in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Charter, and which restricts CSTO member countries’ sale of weapons to adversaries.

One can try to go in that direction, but there will be very major obstacles. Deputy Foreign Minister Shavarsh Kocharyan said this at Tuesday’s NA session debates on the matter of ratifying the second protocol on amendments to the Collective Security Treaty—and with respect to the aforementioned proposal by Melkumyan.

At the same time, the deputy FM recalled that there is a clause in the CSTO Charter, and pursuant to which the participants of this organization can obtain the same armaments at more affordable prices.

Melkumyan’s initiative was supported by NA President Ararat Mirzoyan, who noted the need to advance this idea within the CSTO.
