If there is one person who has to be sentenced for not revealing a case, that person is the Prosecutor General. This is what second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan declared at the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction in Shengavit District today, responding to the allegations of the legal successors of the victims of March 1, 2008 addressed to him.

The second President declared that he had to make a statement since the legal successors of the victims had addressed questions to him in their speeches.

“One of the legal successors said at least one person has to be formally punished, and that person is me since the case of the events of March 1, 2008 hasn’t been revealed. After the events of March 1, I was President for a short period, and revealing the case wasn’t within the scope of my powers. If there is anyone who has to be sentenced for not revealing the case, the first person who has to be sentenced is the Prosecutor General, or the prosecutor conducting proceedings, or the investigative bodies,” he stated.

According to Robert Kocharyan, the lawyers consciously didn’t explain certain details of the case to the legal successors of the victims. “They are offering to sentence me for not revealing the case properly. This is an offense for me because the lawyers are working with those people,” he said, adding that those people have been misled by the head of the Special Investigation Service.

Robert Kocharyan stressed that investigative bodies haven’t taken any action to find out who took people from the municipality to Leo Street in Yerevan. “They said there were no demonstrators at Leo Street. There were demonstrators, and there are many testimonies about that.”

The examination of the case involving the second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan and some other former senior officials accused of overthrowing the constitutional order along the lines of the March 1, 2008 case is held Thursday at the Shengavit seat of the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction, and presided over by Judge Anna Danibekyan. Second President Robert Kocharyan, former Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and former CSTO Secretary General Yuri Khachaturov, former Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan, and former Deputy Prime Minister and ex-Secretary of the National Security Council Armen Gevorgyan are defendants in this case. Solely Robert Kocharyan is in custody along the lines of this case. The second president has been arrested three times; the last one was on June 25, by the decision of Judge Armen Danielyan of the Criminal Court of Appeal.

During today’s trial, Robert Kocharyan’s attorneys filed a motion for immediate release of Robert Kocharyan on the basis of the September 4 decision of the Constitutional Court of Armenia.
