The working group to study the causes of a system failure in the energy system of Armenia summed up the results.

The group was created by order of the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Suren Papikyan.

The group concluded that the failure occurred at about 12:45 hours on July 10 of the current year, at 19:50 on the same day, the system returned to normal operation. As a result of the accident, no one was hurt, there are no technical damages either.

At 12:45:43, the generator was turned off to protect the Hrazdan TPP from the hot gases formed at the entrance to the turbine, then the station was disconnected from the network. Since before the accident, the reactive load amounted to 48.1% of the reactive load of the network, and at the same time there were no compensation devices in the proper amount, the system experienced an unbalance of reactive power, which, in the absence of filling the power shortage with other stations, led to a noticeable voltage drop of the generating units, followed by a shutdown of stations system failure.

Violations of the technical regulations, norms, instructions and other legal acts of technical operation and safety regulations, deficiencies in the operation process, as well as incorrect actions in the process of eliminating the malfunction were not identified. To increase the degree of security of the system, directorates of all companies in the electric power industry were instructed to discuss the incident and analyze it together with employees, conduct extraordinary briefings and exercises. At the same time, take steps to discuss and approve the safety and reliability indicators of the system developed in 2018.

It should be noted that claiming “there is no technical damage”, the department probably had in mind the absence of breakdowns at enterprises. Meanwhile, numerous citizens suffered losses due to damage to household appliances and computers.
