YEREVAN. – The Armenian government today approved the package of draft laws on an addendum to the law on the Constitutional Court, and an addendum to the Law on Providing Officials Activities, Servicing and Social Guarantees, and considered this package urgent.

The draft proposes a procedure for the exclusively voluntary early retirement of judges of the Constitutional Court, and with maintaining all social guarantees.

The draft was presented by Justice Minister Rustam Badasyan.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, for his part, noted that the Constitution stipulates a 12-year term for the judges to the Constitutional Court, its President shall be elected by its members for a term of six years, and all these provisions have already entered into force.

The Prime Minister noted that in Armenia every ten years the issue of constitutional amendments is raised, and if we follow that logic, there may ever be a situation for the provisions to change. He noted that the aforesaid addenda give people the opportunity to support themselves and to the functioning of the “dream court,” but without social losses.

The Prime Minister said that this issue had been discussed with partner international organizations, and it has yet to be sent to the National Assembly for discussion.
