The One Health coalition of Armenia has issued a statement on the recent events at the Yerevan Zoo.

The statement said that this coalition was involved in determining the causes of the recent deaths of kangaroos and mouflons in the zoo.

According to the findings of the Veterinary and Phytosanitary Laboratory Services Center, all 6 animals have died due to injuries caused by external factors.

Subsequently, Armenian and foreign veterinarians jointly inspected the dead mouflons (since the bodies of the dead kangaroos were destroyed for unknown reasons shortly after the autopsy), which revealed that the cause of death of the two animals examined was injuries inflicted by dogs.

Examination of the areas where these mouflons and kangaroos were kept has revealed that although dogs would be able to enter these areas, it is unlikely that they would be able to get out without any help.

Given that the other animals and birds kept in the vicinity have not been attacked, a number of questions also arise with respect to the choice of attack targets by the dogs.

Based on the aforesaid factors, the One Health coalition came to the final conclusion that although the death of these mouflons and kangaroos was due to injuries caused by dogs, the investigating authorities should not rule out that the incident could have been caused by the human factor, too.
