The annual lighting ceremony on the main Christmas tree in New York took place on Wednesday in the city center, USA Today reported

A tree is about 60 years old and over 23 meters high. It was installed on Rockefeller Plaza. They have about 50 thousand multi-colored light bulbs. A giant 70-pointed crystal star weighing about 450 kg was hoisted to the top. It was created from three million crystals by the master of the Austrian company Swarovski.

The Christmas season in the US begins on the day when lights lit up on the fir trees at Rockefeller Plaza.

The main Christmas tree was installed in downtown New York on November 9. The tree was donated by New Yorker Carol Schulz.

"I came here for a little peek and I started to cry," she said.
