Riots in the center of Beirut have been halted. The security forces are in full control of the situation, a participant in a peaceful demonstration on the square in Beirut told RIA Novosti.

Earlier, police forces did their best to prevent Shiite party supporters from breaking into the central square of Beirut, where there are tents of peaceful demonstrators. Groups of aggressive people threw stones and Molotov cocktails at the police.

According to Lebanese media, the police managed to disperse the supporters of Shiite parties. However, as a result of the riots, parked cars were damaged. Among the demonstrators and law enforcement officers there are victims. The reinforced units of the internal forces continue to be on high alert.

Supporters of Shiite parties are not the first to attack peaceful demonstrators in central Beirut and other cities. In previous times, dozens of Shiites with sticks smashed and set fire to the tent camps of activists and beat participants in peaceful rallies.

Anti-government demonstrations kicked off in Lebanon on October 17. Despite the resignation of the government of Saad Hariri on October 29, unrest in the country did not stop. The economic and financial situation in the country is in crisis. The president of the country, Michel Aoun, announced in early October that the state was suffering from financial blockade and sanctions.
