The German Ministry of Economics and Energy regrets the intention of the US to impose sanctions on the Russian gas pipelines Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream, said representative of the department head Peter Altmaier.

German position with respect to sanctions with extraterritorial effect is unequivocal: they do not recognize them, DPA reported referring to Altmaier.

The US House of Representatives voted to adopt a defense budget that would impose sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream pipelines to ensure European energy security. The Nord Stream 2 under construction is called the instrument of coercion and political pressure” which will weaken US ties with Germany and Europe as a whole, DW reported.

The draft law imposes sanctions on ships laying pipes for gas pipelines and on foreign citizens who are involved in the operation of these ships for a five-year term. Now the Senate should consider the document. The discussion are scheduled for December 20, after which the bill will be sent to President Donald Trump who has already said that he is going to sign it.  The US president will be able to stop the sanctions if he proves to Congress that he minimized Russia's use of gas pipelines for political purposes.
