UN officials do not use WhatsApp as it is not considered safe, the organization’s official said after UN experts accused Saudi Arabia of using an online communications platform to hack Amazon’s head phone Jeff Bezos, Reuters reported.

Earlier, independent UN experts said that they have information indicating the possible participation of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, in the alleged cyber attack in 2018, during which the billionaire’s phone was hacked. The report claims that Bezos’s iPhone was hacked by a malicious video file sent from the WhatsApp account used by the Crown Prince.

When asked if UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had communicated with the Saudi crown prince or any other world leaders using WhatsApp, UN spokesman Farhan Haq said on Thursday: “The senior officials at the U.N. have been instructed not to use WhatsApp, it’s not supported as a secure mechanism.”

“So no, I do not believe the secretary-general uses it,” Haq said. He later added that the directive not to use WhatsApp was given to U.N. officials in June last year.
