The French parliament has approved the StopCovid smartphone app. Meanwhile, opposition parties condemned the contact tracing application for infringing on personal freedoms and citizens' rights.

According to CNN, the vote was purely symbolic and was supposed to let the government of French President Emmanuel Macron learn that StopCovid has political support.

On Tuesday, the National Commission for Digital Freedom gave the green light to the app. According to experts of the French digital rights association, La Quadrature du Net, nearly 60-80 percent of the country's population will have to use the app to make it useful in the fight against COVID-19.
