Italy continues to lift the restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic and opens its borders.

From Wednesday, citizens of the 26 EU states and several countries, including the UK, Norway, and Switzerland, are allowed to enter the country. And tourists do not have to observe two-week quarantine, DW reported.

Besides, the Italians are allowed to travel freely to other regions as well.

Some experts expressed doubts about the advisability of removing restrictions on movement since infection rates in several regions of Italy remain high.

More than 33.5 thousand people have died from COVID-19 in Italy since February. In total, Italy has confirmed nearly 233 thousand cases.

Since easing restrictions from May, Italian authorities have repeatedly expressed hope for the return of foreign tourists, including Germans. Italy's tourism industry, which accounts for about 15 percent of GDP, has lost billions of euros as a result of the crisis.
