More than 100 people have died in Tuesday’s explosion in the port of Beirut, Sky News Arabia television reported, citing the Lebanese Red Cross.

Earlier, 78 casualties were reported.

According to the TV channel, the number of injured has exceeded four thousand.

The wave of this blast destroyed and damaged dozens of homes and cars, and shattered windows in many parts of the Lebanese capital city.

City hospitals are overcrowded, and the injured are being sent to the medical centers in the outskirts of Beirut.

The explosion was equivalent to a magnitude 4.5 earthquake, Jordanian seismologists said. It vibrations were felt even in the capital city of Cyprus, Nicosia, 250 km from Beirut.

Beirut has been declared a disaster zone.

A two-week state of emergency has been declared in the city.
