Ilur.am website published the opinion of the first President of the Republic of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan on the debate over the new standards of education.

The first president, in particular, noted:

"The debate creates the impression that the vulgar-materialist historiography of the Soviet years will be replaced by a more provincial, extremely dangerous, Armenian historiography since the independence of Armenia. Armenian historiography with giants like Nicholas Adontz, Hakob Manandyan, Suren Yeremyan, and Gagik Sargsyan has no right to go down to this level, by which, in fact, we are equal to the historiography of Azerbaijan and Turkey. If the Turks and Azeris falsify history, it does not mean that we should resort to falsifications as well. It is impossible to imagine a more humiliating degradation (sorry for using a foreign word).

I do not want to use harsher words, but this is nothing but a national disgrace, not at all worthy of an Armenian nation with a truly glorious history, one of the rare nations that had a state more than 2,500 years ago and still has a state today."
