Ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on Cinematographic Co-Production is due to the need to strengthen cooperation with member states of the Council of Europe in cinematography and develop cinematographic co-production. This is what Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Armenia Arayik Khzmalyan said during a discussion on ratification of the Revised Council of Europe Convention on Cinematographic Co-Production held as part of today’s session of the Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Diaspora, Youth and Sport of the National Assembly.

According to him, the aim of the Convention is to modernize the European Convention on Cinematographic Co-Production signed on October 2, 1992 (entered into force in Armenia on April 1, 2005), as well as to ensure legal and financial grounds for work in cinematography for joint production of artistic films with the participation of the cinematographic companies of three or more countries.

“The revised Convention may be used since there is an absence of a separate agreement on cinematographic co-production in the bilateral format,” Khzmalyan emphasized and added that it is expected that ratification of the amendments to the Convention will give local cinematographers a broader and more modern legal foundation for co-production of films and will create an opportunity for the promotion and development of the film industry in Armenia.
