During a briefing in Brussels, an official representative of the European Commission said the calls to boycott French goods are pushing Turkey even farther from the European Union, RIA Novosti reported.

“The agreement between Turkey and the European Union envisages free exchange of goods. All of Turkey’s commitments need to be observed. The call for boycott of the goods of a member state of the European Union contradicts Turkey’s commitments and pushes it even farther from the EU,” the representative said.

The subsequent escalation of the relations between France and Turkey comes amid the tragedy in the suburb of Paris where an extremist killed a schoolteacher and amid the response of the French authorities which Turkey viewed as a response against Muslims.
