The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) expressed concern over the escalation of violence in Palestinian territories and Israel and called for an end.

As the official representative of this department Rupert Colville said at a briefing in Geneva on Tuesday, OHCHR condemns provocations.

Citing data from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, Colville said 915 Palestinians were injured in East Jerusalem and more than 200 in the West Bank from May 7-10. Most of them were injured as a result of the actions of the Israeli security forces. As of 10 May, OHCHR also received information about the injuries of about 20 Israelis, mostly representatives of the security services.

The spokesman recalled that force should not be used against those who exercise their rights peacefully, and its disproportionate or unnecessary use is prohibited. Referring to the rocket attacks against Israel by Palestinian armed groups, Colville noted that the use of indiscriminate weapons such as rockets fired at Israel is strictly prohibited by international humanitarian law and must be stopped immediately.

OHCHR called on the opposing sides to calm the situation and avoid further violence.
