A wealth tax would help finance the world's socio-economic recovery from the pandemic, said UN Secretary-General António Guterres speaking in the European Parliament.

To date, in just one year, the wealth of the world's richest people has increased by $ 5 trillion, he noted reiterating his call on governments to consider imposing a solidarity tax or wealth tax on the wealth of these people, as well as those who have benefited from the pandemic, to fund socio-economic recovery.

Guterres added that as a result of the pandemic, hundreds of millions of people fell into poverty, and entire countries faced the threat of bankruptcy.
