European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on Kosovo and Serbia to resolve their disputes through dialogue and ease recent tensions over license plates, AP reports.

Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Pristina to meet with senior leaders as part of her regional tour ahead of the EU-Western Balkans Summit on October 6.

It is vital that Kosovo and Serbia normalize their relations, she said at a press conference with Kosovo Prime Minister.

According to her, the EU-facilitated dialogue is the only platform for resolving the current crisis.

Representatives of the two countries met in Brussels on Wednesday with the assistance of EU envoy Miroslav Lajcak.

Last week, the Kosovo government dispatched special police forces to border crossing points to enact a new rule for removing Serbian license plates from vehicles entering the country, saying the validity period of 10 years had expired.

The Kosovo Serbs closed the border with trucks, and people could only cross the border on foot.
