United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Tuesday that Washington supports Taiwan's participation in the United Nations' (UN) system, describing it as "not a political issue, but a pragmatic one."

Blinken stressed that "Taiwan's exclusion undermines the important work of the UN and its related bodies" as its citizens are not allowed to engage in the organization's activities "simply because of the passports they hold." He called on the other members to support "Taiwan's robust, meaningful participation throughout the UN system and in the international community, consistent with our 'one China' policy."

Blinken's remarks come after the Chinese Foreign Ministry described the efforts to proclaim Taiwan an independent country as going “nowhere.”
