The number of children who became orphans during the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. might be higher than it was previously assumed, Time reports, citing Pedatrics magazine’s study.

Based on the study, more than 120,000 children in the U.S. have lost one of their parents and grandparents who served as their main sources of financial assistance. Another 22,000 children have been saved from the death of a second guardian who had provided them with an apartment, but hadn’t met the other main needs of the child. Overall, COVID-19 has caused 15% growth of the number of orphans, researchers say.
