Leader of the opposition “Armenia” faction of the National Assembly of Armenia Seyran Ohanyan and the faction’s members on Thursday met with co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for monitoring of obligations and commitments by Armenia Kimmo Kiljunen and Boriana Aberg.

As reported the National Assembly of Armenia, Ohanyan touched upon the 44-day war and its consequences and stated that, on international platforms, it is necessary to raise the issue that the war was an encroachment against the right of the people of Artsakh to live and create in their historical homeland. He also emphasized that the Azerbaijani-Turkish tandem committed war crimes against the Armenians of Artsakh, used banned weapons and continues to desecrate Armenian historical and cultural values. Ohanyan considered inadmissible the invasion of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces of the sovereign territory of Armenia.

According Kimmo Kiljunen, when Armenia and Azerbaijan were member states of the Council of Europe, it was clear that there would only be a peaceful resolution of the issue..

The members of the opposition faction touched upon the democratic processes, issues related to freedom of speech, the flaws in the judicial-legal sector and the amendments made to the Electoral Code. Aram Vardevanyan particularly touched upon the inadmissibility of criminal cases launched against opposition MPs and viewed this as a violation of the right of an MP to immunity. The MP said even though amendments have been made to the Electoral Code, the regulations for campaigns and funding for political parties are not clear.
