American millionaire Robert Durst, sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his girlfriend and suspected of murdering his wife, has died at the age of 78, writes Gazeta, citing the New York Post.

According to the newspaper, in recent months he experienced health problems. At the end of last year, he was hooked up to a ventilator after testing positive for coronavirus. He also had bladder cancer. California Department of Corrections officials confirmed that Durst died of natural causes in the hospital.

He was sentenced to life in prison in October for the brutal murder of his longtime confidant, Susan Berman, and shortly thereafter was charged with the murder of his wife, Kathleen Durst, in 1982.

In addition, in 2001, Durst was wanted in several states after body parts belonging to his neighbor Morris Black were found floating in Galveston Bay, Texas. He was hiding in Galveston disguising himself as an old mute woman named Dorothy Siener. He was later acquitted, as the murder was ruled in self-defense.

Durst was born on April 12, 1943, to real estate tycoon Seymour Durst and his wife, Bernice Herstein. His mother died when he was 7 years old, after falling or jumping from the roof of a family home in Westchester County.

Durst himself is described as a loner who tortured his brothers and sisters.
