The National Assembly (NA) of Armenia received Sunday the letter of resignation by the President. Armenian News-NEWS.am has learned about this from Tsovinar Khachatryan, the spokesperson of NA speaker Alen Simonyan.

As reported earlier, President Armen Sarkissian resigned Sunday evening. In his respective statement, Sarkissian noted that he had thought about this for a long time and after about four years of active work decided to resign from the presidency. According to Sarkissian, the Armenian president does not have the necessary tools to have an effect on the radical processes of domestic and foreign policy in the current difficult times for Armenia and the Armenian nation.

Armen Sarkissian's resignation from the post of President is considered accepted once it was submitted to the NA.

Pursuant to Article 144 of the Constitution of Armenia, in the event of the President's dismissal, impossibility of holding this office, resignation or death, the powers of the President shall be exercised by the NA speaker until the newly elected President assumes office.

This means that NA speaker Alen Simonyan will temporarily carry out the duties of the President until a special election of the new President of Armenia.
