A Turkish court has sentenced journalist Sedef Kabash to two years and four months in prison on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Diken reported.

The court made the decision even after the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ruled late last year that laws governing free speech in Turkey must be changed to prevent such persecution.

Kabash was detained in late January after she quoted a proverb that prosecutors found offensive to Erdogan.
