They have promised that the road leading to the Upper Lars checkpoint would soon be open for cars. Aram Tananyan,  Armenia’s customs attaché at the aforesaid checkpoint on the Russia-Georgia border, stated this during a discussion Friday.

He informed that this road was closed again Thursday, but the Georgian side promised to clear the road from snow and start letting cars pass the checkpoint.

"Last month the road was closed due to [winter] weather conditions. Several times during the month the road was [re]opened for a short time, a large flow of cars passed, but the trucks remained. The day before yesterday 350 cars and 200 trucks passed, whereas yesterday the road was closed again," Tananyan said.

The Armenian official informed that the number of trucks on the road leading to the Upper Lars checkpoint exceeds 3,500, of which 15 to 20 percent are either Armenian ones or trucks transporting goods to Armenia.

"There is no infrastructure on the whole road leading to the checkpoint to ensure normal conditions for drivers to stay in the queue. All hope is in the drivers' resilience. Help along the way is episodic. Moreover, I have not seen any discrimination against Armenian drivers," Tananyan added.
