Twitter will pay a fine of $150 million for the disclosure of personal data of users, US Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission reported.

From May 2013 to September 2019, the administration of Twitter misled users about the use of confidential data, according to the lawsuit of the US authorities. According to the authorities, the social network used the phone numbers and email addresses of users for targeting. In total, more than 140 million users were affected, according to the FTC.

Twitter agreed to pay the fine and promised to take data protection measures. In particular, the administration of the social network is obliged to develop a comprehensive program to ensure data confidentiality and information security, and in the future to conduct regular checks of the data security system. In addition, the company will have to report on the introduction of any new product or service that collects users' personal information.
