The restoration of full diplomatic relations with Turkey will help strengthen economic relations and friendship between the Israeli and Turkish peoples, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said.

"I welcome the restoration of full diplomatic relations with Turkey, an important development that will strengthen economic relations, mutual tourism and friendship between the Israeli and Turkish peoples. Good neighborly relations and a spirit of partnership in the Middle East are important for all of us," the president said in a statement.

For his part, Prime Minister Yair Lapid said that renewed relations with Turkey are important for regional stability and are important economic news for Israeli citizens.

Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Turkey had decided to appoint an ambassador to Israel and to restore diplomatic relations.

Relations between Israel and Turkey deteriorated sharply in 2010 after the incident with the seizure by Israeli special forces of the Mavi Marmara ship that left Turkey for the Gaza Strip. In May 2018, Ankara invited the Israeli ambassador to Turkey to leave the country following protests in the Gaza Strip amid the 70th anniversary of Israel's formation and the move of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem to coincide with the anniversary. At the time, 59 Palestinians were killed in the clashes and more than 2.7 thousand were wounded.
