The U.S. supports increasing the number of permanent and non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, President Joe Biden said during his speech at the UNGA.

The United States supports increasing the number of both permanent and non-permanent members of the Council. That includes permanent seats for those countries that we have long supported, permanent seats for Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean, he clarified. It's time for this institution to become more inclusive so that the US can better respond to the needs of today's world.

He also added that the permanent members of the UNSC should consistently uphold and defend the UN charter and refrain from using the veto except in rare emergencies to ensure that the authority and effectiveness of the Council is maintained.
