Discussing a comprehensive treaty on relations, including peace, with Japan, which has a clearly unfriendly position, is impossible, said Nikolai Nozdrev, director of the Third Department of Asia of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

He noted that the Russian side has previously negotiated with Tokyo a comprehensive document that meets modern realities and defines the main directions of the accelerated development of the entire complex of Russian-Japanese relations.

"As noted in a statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry on March 21, 2022, it is clear that the discussion of such a treaty with the state, which occupies an openly unfriendly position and seeks to harm the interests of our country, is impossible," the diplomat noted.

Earlier, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that despite complicated relations with Russia over Ukraine, Japan is firmly committed to resolving the territorial issue and concluding a peace treaty.
