Nuclear safety cannot be put at risk due to military operations. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told about this Wednesday to reporters at Yerevan State University (YSU), when asked about the threats made by Azerbaijanis against the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant of Armenia.

Grossi noted that he has heard such statements before, and they are unacceptable. He said that both the IAEA and he himself have declared—moreover, very actively—that nuclear safety should not be at risk due to the conflict.

Grossi hoped that this would never happen, and added that he clearly had stated that this is unacceptable.

Back in July 2020, a representative of the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan had issued threats of launching missiles at the Metsamor nuclear plant.

The IAEA chief, who is on a working visit to Armenia, delivered a lecture for YSU students.
