Poland has submitted a formal request to the European Union to suspend fines of 1 million euros a day imposed by the EU's highest court over Warsaw's failure to comply with the court's judicial reform order.

The fine was imposed just over a year ago because of Poland's failure to dissolve the disciplinary chamber for judges, which Brussels called politicized. The fines were deducted from EU funds for Poland. Warsaw has since replaced the chamber with a new body, but critics say the problem of undermining judicial independence has not been solved.

According to him, the request contains strong arguments about how the disciplinary system for judges has changed.
