A regular meeting of the Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs of the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) National Assembly (NA) was convened Tuesday.

On the agenda was the matter of debating on the bill on amendments to the Criminal Code, the Artsakh NA informs Armenian News-NEWS.am.

According to the main speaker, Minister of Justice of Artsakh, Zhirayr Mirzoyan, the extreme danger of high treason and espionage for a country engaged in war operations, in particular, in the conditions of martial law, has made it necessary to review the current regulations and impose the most severe punishment.

Accordingly, the aforementioned bill proposes to make the punishments defined in the Artsakh Criminal Code articles on high treason and espionage more severe. As a result of the adoption of this draft law, in the case of high treason, a punishment of 15 to 20 years, or life imprisonment will be imposed, and in the case of espionage—a punishment of 12 to 20 years, or life imprisonment.

The package of respective bills was approved by the aforesaid NA committee, and it will be put on the agenda of the regular session of the Artsakh National Assembly.
